BOX SCORE   H vs.York Tech 5/9 On the last day of the 2017 Varsity season the Spartans showed up to Hanover with a lot on the line. The Nighthawks won a 10 inning thriller at Tech back on April 19th. Entering last night, Tech had won its previous 2 games in exciting fashion; extra innings against Biglerville and a 6 run deficit turned victory against Fairfield… The Spartans were looking to close the season on a 3 game win streak.   The game was scoreless through 2 innings until Tech broke through in the top of the 3rd . An RBI single by Tyler Smith (Sr.) scored Joey VonRohr (Fr.) who had singled and stolen 2nd base. Smith’s hit capped off a tremendous season for him in which he was one of the Spartans most consistent offensive threats. In the bottom of the 3rd the Nighthawks answered with a run of their own to tie the game. [1-1]   Tech broke the tie in the 5th when Luke Greisler (Jr.) singled, stole second and then scored on a Juan Lopez (So.) single. [2-1] The Spartans added an insurance run in the 6th on a similar series of events. Nathan Chronister (Jr.) singled, stole second and scored on another Joey VonRohr (Fr.) base hit. The [3-1] to lead would hold as Luke Greisler (Jr.) pitched a Dominant complete game on the mound. Greisler struck out 11 batters and allowed just 1 run on 4 hits in 7 innings of work.   Two years ago the Spartans won 2 games at the Varsity level. Last season we set out to change the attitude, effort, and environment of the team and the players made tremendous strides, winning 5 games along the way. This season our kids took it again to another level. Tech was tied or leading in the 6th inning (or later) and lost 7 times this year. With 3 games left, having been knocked down over and over again… our kids got back up and kept playing hard. They finished the season winning all 3 of those games. Each win was vindication that what they’re doing is working. They believed in themselves and each other and they believed in their coaches as well. I’m so thankful and proud of our guys for how they became a little family at the end of the season.   Please congratulate our seniors on their season and they careers as York Tech student-athletes: Tyler Smith (Electrical), Kyle Slyder (Masonry), Christian Slyder (Carpentry), and Brian Honeychuck (Comm. Technology).   Season notes: -          7 total wins (2 more than last season) -          5 league wins (4 more than last season) -          2 potential YAIAA all stars (Lopez, Greisler) [nominations still pending] -          2 freshmen earned Varsity Letters (VonRohr, Zorbaugh) -          Zorbaugh recorded 3 wins on the mound -          Greisler batted over .400! (.407) -          Greisler and Lopez led the league in On Base % (according to online statistics) -          Catcher Cam Schanberger (So.) threw out 6 runners (our team only threw out 1 all of last year!) -          Chronister stole 20 bases in 20 games! -          5 different sets of umpires congratulated the coaches on an improved and RESPECTFUL team.   York Tech Baseball Mission Statement: Spartan Baseball exists to develop young leaders, provide an outlet for adolescent boys and positively represent YCST in the community.   I’m very proud of how our young men have represented this school. Their success is an indication of the continued growth of York Tech. Go Spartans!

BOX SCORE   FF vs.York Tech 5/4 Yesterday was Senior Day for the York Tech baseball team. Our senior players were accompanied by family and friends to celebrate and honor their dedication to our school. Tyler Smith, Christian Slyder, Kyle Slyder and Brian Honeychuck could not have written a better ending than what played out here at Tech yesterday.   In the top of the 1st inning the Fairfield Knights scored 6 runs, thanks to 4 walks, 4 hits and multiple Spartan errors. With several members of the York Tech administration on hand along with all of the faithful Spartan supporters, Senior Day looked like it may end in a mercy rule loss… To make matters worse, each of the first 2 hitters in Tech’s lineup made quick, easy outs and with 2 outs and nobody on base Luke Greisler (Jr.) ripped a triple into Right-Center field. When he got to third he looked me in the eye and said, “That’s how we get something started!”… He seemed to know something none of our fans or anyone on the other team could have seen coming. Back to back hits by Juan Lopez (So.) and Tyler Smith (Sr.) made it 6-2. The Spartans added 1 more in the inning, helped by a Christian Slyder (Sr.) walk, to cut the deficit to 6-3. Lopez took over on the mound and shut down the Knights in the second. 2 more runs in the bottom of the second, including another Senior Day hit for senior Tyler Smith made the score 6-5.   A single Knight run in the 3rd made it 7-5 and then the flood gates opened for the Spartans. For the second time this season Tech unloaded for a 7 run inning that included a huge hit from senior Christian Slyder and multiple hits by Lopez, Cam Schanberger (So.), Zadin Zorbaugh (Fr.), Jake Perry (So.), Joey VonRohr (Fr.) and Nathan Chronister (Jr.)… 2 and half innings after trailing 6-0 the Spartans now led by 5.   Tech added 2 more runs and allowed just 1, ultimately winning 14-8 against a tough divisional opponent. Fairfield had beaten Tech each of the last 3 times: 1 mercy rule, and 2 walk-off extra inning victories.   The season has been an incredible story of growth, and this game was such an important result for the players. They have experienced adversity in every way you can imagine on the baseball field. And after each heart-breaking defeat, they got right back up ready to compete together again the next day… finally that perseverance paid off over these last 2 games. The players have become a very tight knit group and Coach Brown and I could not be more proud of the little family they’ve become. With 1 game left the Spartans have surpassed last season’s win total and are looking to end the year on a 3 game win streak on Monday @ Hanover.   Thank you for your continued support!

BOX SCORE   BIG vs.York Tech 5/3 The Spartans traveled to Biglerville tonight with absolutely nothing to lose, and a whole lot to prove. Our Spartans have seen far more than their fair share of heartbreaking losses… 7 times this year Tech has been either tied or ahead after 6 innings and ended up losing. That is nearly half the games we play in an entire season. All of those games could have easily gone the other way if it weren’t for a few fateful breaks or miscues at the very end. Coach Brown and I have been sick to our stomachs for our players, because of how close they’ve been to a season for the ages. All of that being said when we showed up to Biglerville this afternoon nothing would have surprised us. I know we’re good enough to compete and win, but I also know that getting your heart ripped out that many times can be demoralizing. On top of all that, Biglerville has ten-runned us each of the last 3 meetings.   Today was a different story. The Spartans played fantastic defense and were led by an outstanding pitching performance by Nathan Chronister (Jr.) Tech took a 2-0 lead into the 7th inning when it looked like fate might strike again. Two bad hops and a misplayed flyball ended up in Biglerville scoring twice and having the winning run on 3rd base. Having thrown 97 pitches, Chronister was (by rule) facing his last batter. He was able to make 1 more quality pitch and got an easy flyball to Jake Perry (So.) to send the game to extra innings. This was Tech’s 4th extra inning game of the year.   After tying the game, Biglerville’s crowd and players were loud and excited. Chronister started the inning with a leadoff single to right field. He moved to second on a wild pitch, and then was bunted to third by Joey VonRohr (Fr.) After Biglerville got VonRohr at first, Chronister had taken a huge turn at 3rd to draw a throw. The 1st basemen stepped off the bag and rocketed a throw…. Into the corn field behind the Spartan dugout allowing Chronister to score give tech a 3-2 lead. With 1 out and nobody on base Luke Greisler (Jr.) was hit by a pitch. Greisler stole second and scored on a Juan Lopez (So.) base hit. The score was now 4-2. The scoring ended there and the new Spartan pitcher was Zadin Zorbaugh (Fr.) Zadin has pitched in 3 non-league games this year and was victorious in 2 of them. He told me before the inning, “Coach I’m nervous. I’ve never been in a game like this… I just don’t want to mess up for my team.”   He didn’t. With men at second and third and 2 outs Biglerville’s 2-hole hitter lined a shot into center field, where Jake Perry (So.) made a fantastic catch to end the ball game. Tech held on to win 4-2. Please congratulate the players and wish them luck for tomorrow’s senior night game.   *Extras* -Last year Biglerville beat us 22-3 in our last game of the year. -Cam Schanberger (So.) threw out 2 baserunners trying to steal second. -Juan Lopez (So.) was 2-2 with 2 walks, 1 RBI, 1 SB and 6 assists at SS. -This is Tech’s 5th win of the season matching last season’s total with 2 to play. -Tomorrow is Senior Night and Brian Honeychuck will be throwing out the honorary 1st pitch.

BOX SCORE   EY vs.York Tech 4/24 Last night the Spartans traveled to Eastern to take on the Golden Knights. Headed into the game York Tech had lost 3 of its last 5 games in the opposing teams’ last at-bat: -Fairfield overcame the Spartans 8-7 in 8 innings. -Hanover defeated Tech 3-2 in 10 innings. -And Harrisburg ended the game with a 7th inning walk-off base hit - winning 4-3.   The Spartans easily won the other 2 of those 5 games by scores of 16-2 over Columbia and 8-2 over Steelton-Highspire. It’s clear that the team has been competing and playing well and it is a real credit to the players’ perseverance that they continue to come out and play quality baseball amidst some heart-breaking losses.   Tech took an early 1-0 lead at Eastern as Nathan Chronister (Jr.) singled, stole second, was sacrificed to 3rd by Joey VonRohr (Fr.) and scored on a Luke Greisler (Jr.) Sac-Fly. Part of the recent success for the Spartans has been their ability to take early leads. In the bottom of the first, Eastern answered quickly with a leadoff HR and added another run to lead 2-1.   Team captain Luke Greisler (Jr.) made a point to the team in a postgame huddle last week that we play with more confidence and aggression when we are winning. He challenged the team to maintain that confidence and calculated aggression no matter what the score is. He mentioned our mantra “Play Hard. Get Better. Have Fun.” And said that as a team we believe in those things no matter what the score is. This challenge went a long way for a number of players and as a whole we have played very steady baseball, which is a direct tribute to our mindset and focus… and to the leadership of our captains and upper classmen.   Trailing 2-1 in the 3rd inning the Spartans put together their best offensive inning of the year. Hits by Chronister (Jr.), Greisler (Jr.), VonRohr (Fr.), Tyler Smith (Sr.), Jake Perry (So.), Camden Schanberger (So.) and Zadin Zorbaugh (Fr.), resulted in a 7 run barrage. Tech sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning. The game settled down and Eastern fought back to score 3 runs over the final 4 innings but the Spartans held on to win 8-5. After those very difficult losses, Coach Brown and I are very proud of the continued level of hustle, focus and competitiveness the team has displayed. They deserved this victory and it’s been exciting and gratifying to see them grow and continue to fight.   This is our 4th win of the season, 1 short of last year’s total with 7 games remaining. Our goal is to continue to improve every day and each year by working hard, finding ways to grow and enjoying every second of it and 2 more wins would go a long way to showing our players that hard work really does pay off. Thank you to so many of you who continue to support the team and please encourage them to finish the season strong.

BOX SCORE   SH vs.York Tech 4/18 In the month of April the Spartans are beginning to experience some of the fruits of all the hard work they’ve put in. They started a very important week with an 8-2 victory yesterday at Steelton. The team executed in every major area of the game. Zadin Zorbaugh (Fr.) threw 4 innings allowing just 1 run and earned his second W of the year. Luke Greisler (Jr.), Nathan Chronister (Jr.) and Juan Lopez (So.) completed the last 3 innings allowing just 1 more run and dominating the Rollers offense. The defense played tremendously, committing 1 error and making several key plays to ensure the victory. Cam Schanberger (So.) continues to shine defensively behind the plate, throwing out another runner in the 6th who was trying to steal. Offensively, the Spartans were led by their 3 big hitters: Chronister, Greisler and Lopez. These 3 players accounted for 6 of the 8 Spartan runs. Greisler who attends York College for classes on Tuesdays showed up to the field 5 minutes before game time. He then stepped in the batter’s box with 2 outs and nobody on base in the first inning and hit a ground rule double over the left fielder’s head. Greisler stole 3rd and scored on a Lopez base hit which ignited the offense. Tyler Smith (Sr.), Cam Schanberger (So.), Jeffrey Gonzalez (So.), Christian Slyder (Sr.) and Joey VonRohr (Fr.) all had hits in the game as well. If it weren’t for a few untimely base-running mistakes the game probably would have ended in a 10-run rule. All in all, it was a very successful and exciting game for Tech.   The Spartans continue action tonight at home against Hanover in a very important divisional game. The Spartans are 1-3 in the division, 2 of the 3 losses in close contests by razor-thin margins. Please congratulate the team and wish them luck tonight against Hanover!! It means a lot to our players and to the coaches to have your support. They always point out and notice when staff members attend games or congratulate them in class. Many of you consistently make our players feel appreciated so thank you for that. Go Spartans!

BOX SCORE   COL vs.York Tech 4/11 Yesterday was a much needed break out game for the Spartans. The team had been on a bit of a slide after defeating Delone Catholic early last week. A heartbreaking loss at York Catholic followed by a couple un-Spartan-like performances on Saturday and Monday brought the Spartans to a turning point in the season. A letter to the team from Coach Brown summed up the feelings of the coaching staff and refocused the players on the importance hard work, attention to detail and having a good time on the field. The players responded in a resounding way pounding 16 hits and scoring 16 runs while allowing just 2 at Columbia last night. There was a different energy in the dugout and on the field and it was a great experience and memory for our players. It would be far too much for this email to recognize all of the outstanding individual performances but I’ll highlight a few below. Baseball nerds can check out the box score for more stats.   Zadin Zorbaugh (Fr.) 1-2, RBI, R at the plate and 5 innings, 8 k’s and just 1R on the mound. Juan Lopez (So.) 3-4, 2 RBI, 3R Nathan Chronister (Jr.) 1-2, RBI, 2 SB, 3R Tyler Smith (Sr.) 2-5, 2 RBI, SB, 2R Christian Slyder (Sr.) 1-2, SB, R   Please congratulate these players on their hard work and success last night. The Spartans head to Fairfield tonight for a big contest as they look to get back to .500 in the division.  Thanks for your continued support!
